Wedding Dresses and Your Shape

This may stand as a guide to start from. We encourage you to try on different types and styles of dresses to find the one that suits you best.

Short and Petite:

Look for petite sized dresses. Dresses with neat seams or lace that run up and down lengthwise. Consider empire, princess, and A-Line dresses with trim at the neckline and shoulders to draw the eye toward your face.

Tall:

Look for dresses with trim that wraps all around, wide sashes, big collars, raglan sleeves, flared or tiered skirts, and low necks.

Full Figured:

Consider a princess cut with no waist seam and vertical panels. Avoid figure hugging sheaths. Look at organza rather than shiny fabrics like satin. Also a dropped-V waist will work well. Details on the neckline near your face will bring the attention up. Don't get too many ruffles or layer that may thicken proportions.

Slender:

You can choose fabrics that add texture, sheen, and horizontal ribbing like satins and velvets. Look at gathered skirts, puffy sleeves, maybe even a sash in another color from the dress.

Thick Waist:

Look at lifted waistlines like A-Lines. Avoid tight waists and cummerbunds.

Broad Shoulders:

Consider dresses with set-in sleeves, low V's, or high covered necks. Avoid puffy sleeves, bare necklines, big collars, haltered tops, and shoulder pads.

Wide Hips:

Try an A-Line or flared half circle skirt. Choose a broad collar and puffy sleeve.

Narrow Shoulders:

Look at sleeves that gather at the top, bare necklines, and shoulder pads that are built in.

Big Bosom:

Try V and U shaped necklines, also high keyhole necklines. Avoid empire waists that fall right under bust.
